High-performance separation membranes are becoming easier to manufacture at scale

Short note, about 5 minutes to read.

What happened

Making materials that can separate particular molecules is not new. The difficulty has been turning some of the best-performing materials into membranes that can be manufactured at scale without losing much of their separation performance.

That is beginning to change.

High-performing selective materials → MOF-rich membranes → scalable membrane manufacture

Researchers led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) produced membranes containing more than 90% by volume of a highly porous material (metal-organic framework, or MOF). The membranes retained strong gas-separation performance while being made using scalable processes, including continuous roll-to-roll fabrication at an industrial plant.

Independently, researchers led by Tiangong University produced self-standing MOF-rich membranes while reducing defects that can undermine molecular separation.

A third team led by National Taiwan University demonstrated highly selective MOF membranes made without the seed layer normally required during their growth.

Together, the results show that different manufacturing barriers to making high-performance MOF membranes are beginning to weaken.

Why this matters

Membranes can separate molecules without processing an entire mixture in the same way as some conventional separation methods.

But exceptional material performance is useful industrially only if it can be turned into membranes that are practical to manufacture.

Recent work is bringing those two requirements closer together.

Who should care

  • Chemical and industrial processing companies
  • Gas separation and purification companies
  • Membrane and filtration companies
  • Advanced materials manufacturers
  • Industrial equipment and engineering companies
  • Investors tracking emerging industrial technologies

What could change over the next 2 to 3 years

The next step will be showing that these membranes can be produced in larger quantities and incorporated into larger separation systems while maintaining their performance.

Watch for larger membrane modules, longer operating tests and demonstrations using industrially relevant gas mixtures.

What might block this

Manufacturing at scale is only one part of making these membranes useful.

Small defects, contaminants and prolonged operation can reduce performance. Costs and the ability to manufacture membranes consistently will also matter.

The recent results therefore do not yet show that MOF membranes can replace established industrial separation systems.

Why I am sharing this

Some advanced materials already perform remarkably well at separating molecules. The harder question is whether that precision can survive the journey into something industry can actually make and use.

That journey is beginning to look more practical.
